چکیده

Parachute opening shock tests were conducted with an instrumented test manikin to measure and record transmitted neck loads. The standard paratrooper helmet, as well as two developmental helmet systems, were fitted to the manikin head. These two systems alter the headborne weight and center of mass from the standard helmet, potentially increasing the risk of acute neck injury during parachute opening. A total of 52 trials were successfully conducted. A statistically significant increase (p<0.05) in the neck flexion moment was found in one of the two developmental systems, but peak moments were below published neck injury thresholds.

The Effects of Variable Helmet Weight and Subject Bracing on Neck Loading during Frontal -gx Impact

Helmet-mounted systems (HMS), such as night vision goggles and helmet-mounted displays, are designed to enhance pilot performance. Using HMS, however, may also affect pilot safety by increasing the potential for neck injury during ejection due to the increase in dynamic forces generated in the cervical spine as a result of the change in helmet inertial properties. Pilot bracing techniques may a...

Biodynamic simulations of the effect of a neck-mounted air bag on the head/neck response during high G acceleration.

New helmet-mounted devices (such as night-vision goggles, laser eye protection, etc.) have created new safety hazards for pilots during ejection or high G maneuvering. In order to prevent the resulting head/neck injuries, this study extends the air-bag protection system developed for ground vehicles to a neck mounted system for aircrew personnel. Results, carried out by computer biodynamic simu...

Overview of the Navair Spinal Injury Mitigation Program

In order to enhance flight performance, numerous Naval and joint DoD development programs feature head-supported devices (HSD) for fixed and rotary wing aircraft, e.g. night vision goggles and displays. However, wearing these systems during long duration operations or while exposed to repeated shock, impact, ejection, and crash increases the risk of spinal injury. Factors that affect injury tol...

Inducing Head Motion with a Novel Helmet during Head-First Impact Can Mitigate Neck Injury Metrics: An Experimental Proof- of-Concept Investigation using Mechanical Surrogates

There is a need for cervical spine injury prevention from head-first impacts in many sports and in various transportation contexts. We present an experimental helmet prototype that induces anterior or posterior head motion in a head-first impact as a mitigation strategy. Instrumented mechanical surrogates for the human neck, head, and helmet were tested on a drop tower. Peak lower-neck axial fo...

Motorcycle helmet type and the risk of head injury and neck injury during motorcycle collisions in California.

The use of novelty motorcycle helmets is often prompted by beliefs that wearing a standard helmet can contribute to neck injury during traffic collisions. The goal of this analysis was to examine the association between helmet type and neck injury risk and the association between helmet type and head injury. Data were collected during the investigation of motorcycle collisions of any injury sev...
